I am starting to wonder whether the best outcome we could get would be from a giant solar flare like a "Carrington Event" ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrington_event ) that knocks out TV and Communications to such an extent that we citizens have to start talking to one another again. A Chinese EMP weapon would do the same, but a natural event would be better since the US can't retaliate against the Sun.
