Amy Winehouse is the latest inductee into the "Club 27," rock stars that died of self inflicted destruction @ 27 years of age. Hendrix, Joplin, Morison, Cobain... now Amy Winehouse. But do not cry for her, this is what she was looking for. She had a death wish, or as we drug addicts like to say, she was a "Hope-To-Die-Dope-Fiend." She did not want to be fixed.
Indeed, a small percentage of the population, and not just rock stars, are afflicted with this issue. Many do not make it to 40. It starts in youth, usually before puberty, by sexual, physical or emotional abuse, or by trauma, or by loosing a parent at some critical developmental period.
The odds of survival go up for Hope-To-Die-Dope-Fiends as they age and realize that they have maimed themselves emotionally and/or physically. If you make it to or past 49 years of age, you can be said to have outlived it, but that really is never true, you see, your self destructive behavior is still going to shorten your life.
